How Busy was Richard while creating Sharjah Free Zone?In April of 1995, Richard Chichakli was assigned the task of creating an airport-oriented, free trade and industrial zone in the Emirate of Sharjah. The execution phase of the work started on June 16, 1995 and the free zone, which was named "SAIF-Zone" was opened for business on the 2nd day of September 1995. On the opening day more than 93,000 square meters were leased, 73 companies were licensed, and more than 3000 new jobs were created. A run-away success by any measure, and a miracle by the standard of Sharjah, which is 15 km from Dubai, the major business hub in the Persian Gulf. OFAC claims that I was working for Victor Bout during the time I created the free zone. OFAC seem not to comprehend what is entailed in creating an off-shore operation the size of a town, nor do they understand what it means to work for the governor of an Arabian state. So, here is some of the articles written about the project in the world media during 1995 and 1996. I think that should show that I was pretty busy, may be working more than 18 hours a day managing nearly 1,000 employees.
